A checklist before a listing looks convincing.

Keep this open when something looks good, but you have not checked enough detail yet.

First pass checks

CheckWhat to look forWhy it helps
Item typeThe listing belongs in one clear category.Mixed categories make prices and photos misleading.
Photo depthMore than one angle, plus close details where possible.Single-image listings hide shape and finish problems.
Size evidenceMeasurements, fit notes, dimensions, or model compatibility.Names drift. Measurements and specifications are more useful.
Description qualitySpecific materials, dimensions, colour, included parts, or care notes.Thin descriptions shift more risk to you.
Delivery riskWeight, packaging, fragile parts, and return path.A cheap product can become weak after shipping and returns are considered.

A simple shortlist score

Give each promising listing one point for each useful answer below. A listing does not need to be perfect, but a low score tells you to slow down before treating it as a serious option.

PointQuestionWhat a good answer looks like
1Can I see the item clearly?Multiple angles, close-up details, and photos that show the shape or finish.
1Can I check the size?Size chart, dimensions, model reference, outsole length, strap length, or fit notes.
1Do I know what it is made from?Material, fabric weight, finish, included parts, or technical specification.
1Does the category match the risk? The listing is compared with similar items instead of a mixed page of unrelated finds.
1Can I explain why it is shortlisted? One clear reason such as better evidence, lower uncertainty, or stronger category fit.

Category-specific checks

Shoes

Compare size charts, sole profile, toe shape, heel view, and stitching detail. Then browse shoes.

Bags

Check dimensions, strap hardware, interior compartments, zipper finish, and material texture. Continue through bags.

Hoodies

Look at fabric weight, cuffs, hood shape, print placement, and sleeve length. Use hoodies.

Accessories

Measure length, clasp, finish, colour, and packaging expectations. Use accessories.

Electronics

Check model number, plug type, charging standard, software compatibility, and included parts. Use electronics.

Clothing

Compare shoulder, chest, length, fabric, washing notes, and how the garment is supposed to fit. For broader apparel, use clothing.

Risk checks people skip

Before you keep browsing, ask whether the item has a detail that can ruin the purchase even if the listing looks good: unusual sizing, fragile hardware, unclear compatibility, colour differences, heavy shipping weight, or an awkward return path. The point is not to be nervous. It is to notice the expensive questions early.

01

Check whether the listing answers normal buyer questions

A good browsing route should lead you to pages that answer practical questions quickly. If you still cannot tell the size, material, colour, model, or included parts, do not treat the listing as ready.

02

Separate discovery quality from product quality

A spreadsheet can make discovery cleaner. It cannot prove stitching, fabric weight, battery behaviour, shipping handling, or seller service. Keep those checks for QC photos, measurements, agent notes, and platform policies.

03

Leave a note for why you shortlisted it

Write one plain reason beside each candidate: better photos, clearer sizing, lower risk, better category match, or more complete description. If you cannot write a reason, the listing probably only looked interesting because it was open in a tab.

Stop signs

Stop comparing for a moment if every option has the same missing detail. More tabs will not fix missing measurements, unclear photos, or weak compatibility information. Either search a narrower category, change the query, or accept that the item needs more research before it belongs on your shortlist.

Also stop if you are choosing only by price. A lower product price can disappear once shipping weight, fragile packaging, returns, or wrong-size risk are included.

The next sensible step

If the listing still looks good after the checklist, continue through the matching category. If you are unsure, go back to the category page and choose by the detail you need to check. If the search is too broad, return to the start guide and rebuild the shortlist from one item type.
